What a delight to receive a solo disc that concentrates on
extended works for the instrument, and the more so when the soloist is the
accomplished Alan Morrison.
Oskar Bohme`s Trumpet Concerto, in a version for Cornet, opens the programme.
The athleticism of the opening Allegro is right up Morrison`s street, and his
lyrical playing in the central movement is moving and free from sentimentality.
A short, perky Rondo; Allegro Scherzando brings the tuneful work to a jolly
close.
John Carmichael`s Lyric Concerto, another worthwhile transfer from the trumpet
repertoire, is music of a more serious mood. Morrison`s technique is well up to
the essential `trumpet` nature of the first movement and his crystal clear tone
and head for heights are well employed in the Lento and the episodic finale.
Completing the disc are two better known concertos: Denis Wright's, reputedly
the first of its kind, and Ernest Tomlinson`s thoughtful yet strangely neglected
work, written for Maurice Murphy. If the Canzonetta of the former remains the
most charming track of the disc, it is as much for Wright's elegant melody as
Morrison`s sensitive playing.
A player of this calibre, should have more opportunity to perform works like
these in concerts. Meanwhile, it is good to have them on disc - and accompanied
so brilliantly.
